For some reason, when I entered the serial number for the second box, I get an invalid serial number message although I know the number I entered is correct.

While it's possible to change some of the hardware without invalidating the activation, moving to a different box, installing, and trying to activate again won't work. Instead, you're offered an option when you try to activate and fail to call Microsoft; this is called 'phone activation', and while your product key is in theory locked to the first set of hardware you install on, they've been very understanding about moving to new hardware in the past. I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot.:).
